Virginia News Stand: July 15, 2009

Annotations & Elucidations

The Apple Fell From The Virginia Tree To North Carolina

I’ve received some feedback about my commentaries and article previews at the top of each day’s News Stand. So, why not ensconse it with the imprimatur of a column head? Done. Welcome to “Annotations & Elucidations,” a definitive lead-in to each day’s News Stand headlines.

We start with some breaking news you’ll probably read lots more about tomorrow: State GOP Chairman Pat Mullins, Delegates Scott Lingamfelter and Tommy Wright, and Senator Frank Ruff, claim that Governor Tim Kaine’s DNC travels led to him being away from the switch when it came to losing 3,000 jobs to North Carolina when Apple decided to locate a facility there instead of Southside Virginia. Apple indicated Virginia was its first choice but, according to the Republicans, the governor did not include a key tax incentive in an amendment to a Creigh Deeds bill, although assuring lawmakers the key provision was there. RichmondBizSense.com has the story and a link to Mullins’ detailed statement. Meanwhile, according to the Washington Post’s calculations, we have 70 percent of a governor. Even the Charlottesville Daily Progress tells him to mind the store.

Meanwhile, the momentum for more charter schools grows with the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot jumping on board, and a Virginia jail has done what no one else could: Unite the ACLU and conservative Christian groups in pressuring the jail to cease its censoring of mail with Biblical and religious messages and information to prisoners.

In National News, the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that pharmacists of conscious must sell “Plan B.” In the Commentary section, Michele Malkin points out the double standard by the New York Timesfor criticizing an Obama administration scientist who openly celebrates his Christianity, but says nothing of a hard-left secularist science advisor to the president.

ACLU Vs. Veterans

So, just how far are the ACLU and their anti-Christian supporters in the courts willing to go to rid our nation of its Christian heritage? Watch this video to see:

Unreal. We actually live in a nation where judges can order a cross to be covered up! Not exactly what these veterans fought for and watched their buddies die for. Go to donttearmedown.com for more information and to sign an online petition to keep the cross.

And yet, candidates for office continue to tell us that these silly “social issues” don’t matter, are divisive and don’t win elections. All that matters is the almighty dollar.

Well, Obama is taking care of that too. No money and no freedom. God bless America.

(Thanks to our friends at the Free Market Foundation and the Liberty Legal Institute in Texas for letting us know about this case. Kelly Shackelford, the ED at Free Market, is a great friend and has often provided wise counsel to TFF. )

As Relevent Today As It Was During The First Attempt To Nationalize America

An editorial comic from a 1934 edition of the Chicago Tribune, during FDR’s New Deal attempt at nationalizing America. How prescient, for is there any better illustration (pun intended) of what today’s government is doing to our way of life? A planned economy surely is planned destruction, all the better for more government takeovers. After all, can’t waste a good crisis, now can we?
