Annotations & Elucidations

Close Of Business, April

It’s almost like it’s a holiday weekend — there’s not much going on. Maybe it’s a collective political sigh. After all, it’s been an eventful week. So, today brings us more reflection on all of the good news on the cultural front as the media still can’t get enough of it. Leading the News, again, is coverage of Governor Bob McDonnell’s reversal of the Kaine administration’s gag order on Virginia State Police chaplains not to pray according to their faith tradition. We’re mentioned in both articles linked below.

What amazes me is the propensity of the religious right, or any devout Christian for that matter, to pray in public. Is it an expression of faith or has it become more a matter of one-upmanship over the so-called secularists? Sure, it’s their Constitutional right but Jesus himself discouraged it saying, “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth; they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.“ While Jesus’ lessons were often conveyed in hard to understand parables, there’s little ambiguity about his views on public piety. As such, the desire to pray publicly is more a reflection of human failings than human virtues.
