Here’s a little something that shows how far we’ve come and long it’s been all at the same time. Thanks to Bob Sassone at TVSquad.com, we’ve been alerted to a 1966 CBS Christmas promo. Although the artful promo unfortunately ends with a “Season’s Greetings” graphic, the religious theme of the Christmas carols are unmistakable. As Sassone notes, it would be very refreshing to see one of the networks do something similar today amidst the grizzly crime and sexually suggestive fare they offer, but that it won’t happen. So, at once, we see that politically correct tendencies have been institutionalized at big, mainstream media a lot longer than many of us realized, remembered or could even imagine based on a halcyon image of American culture four-and-a-half decades ago. However, it also shows that it wasn’t unreflective of society, either, as the playing of God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman indicates, and that today’s attempt to transform Christmas into a secular holiday is far removed from both the general population’s attitude as well as the media’s own roots.
You won’t see this on CBS anymore, but it’s probably been longer than you think since the media has wished its audience Merry Christmas.
