Senators Webb And Warner: Virginia’s Proud Porkers!

Virginia’s two U.S. Senators, Jim Webb and his junior, Mark Warner, (click to contact), despite their protestations to the contrary — and sophistry about being “raging moderates” — proved they are not “fiscal conservatives” when they voted Tuesday night against a modest reform that would have banned earmarks for one year. But when you also have voted for a half-trillion dollars in new taxes and $1 trillion in new spending in a government takeover of the health care industry, what’s several billion dollars more?

The issue was an amendment by U.S. Senator Jim Demint (R-S.C.) to ban earmarks for one year. House Republicans last week adopted a policy as a caucus that no member would offer an earmark for a year until earmark reform could be worked out. House Democrats followed suit with a vague promise of their own to ban earmarks (but who needs an earmark when you can ram through a trillion-dollar health care takeover), but I digress. The vote was 68-29 against the Demint amendment, with 15 Republicans joining all but four Democrats (see the list) to defeat it. However, it was the first time a majority of Senate Republicans supported the measure. Politico.com reports on the vote here, in an article entitled “The Senate’s proud porkers.”

So, while their political brethren in Richmond went on a fiscal diet, actually cutting spending down to 2006 levels in the recently passed Virginia budget, Senators Warner and Webb continued to pig out in Washington. Should make them a hit at the annual Virginia Pork Festival in Emporia, should they attend. But some would say the pork festival is in Washington and is an on going affair — with Virginia’s two senators among those having the most fun.

Senator Jim Demint asked Congress for a timeout on pork spending. Senators Webb and Warner, though, were having too much fun at the trough to stop.

Repeal It! Update

Last week we reported on a new Web site created by the Club for Growth called Repeal It!, a campaign to encourage citizens, candidates and lawmakers to pledge to their support not only to fight against government-run health care, but to pledge to actively work to repeal it if it  becomes law. Far from a surrender to the inevitable, it is helping fuel the resolve of people nationwide (ahem, see Massachusetts).

The Club reports that in the first two days alone, the Repeal It! pledge was signed by 20 members of Congress, 57 House and Senate candidates; and more than 4,300 American citizens. As of this morning, those numbers were 31, 109 and 9,366, respectively.

Early signers included U.S. Senator Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), U.S. Representative Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), and Kentucky U.S. Senate candidate Rand Paul (son of former presidential candidate Ron Paul). According to a Club e-mail:

Every major Republican primary candidate in at least five states has signed the pledge, guaranteeing voters in Nevada, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky and Kansas a Repeal It! option in November.

Perhaps most gratifying of all, support for the pledge among pro-growth conservative citizens, candidates, and lawmakers has led to an influx of moderate Republicans signing on. This is exactly how a principle organization like the Club for Growth can drive and define a political message. …

Just like we do on the state level! It goes to show how important active and persistent engagement is and far it can go in affecting policy (and our lives) for the better. The Repeal It! pledge is a master stroke idea, not surprising from the Club for Growth. It is on the front lines and cutting edge of educating the electorate on free market principles and electing stalwart free market candidates.

Also of interest is Club President (and former Congressman) Chris Chocola’s opinion piece on Politico.com (read here). As we wrote last week, too many accept big government after it passes and are content only to trim around the edges, attempt some reform or make it work more efficiently, instead of sticking to the principle of ending and killing off government programs that are not constitutionally grounded. Don’t get complacent by one election win (as stunning as it is). After all, Senator-elect Scott Brown isn’t a full-fledged conservative. So, we hope you take the time to read Mr. Chocola’s commentary and sign the Repeal It! pledge as well, to continue to keep the politicians’ feet to the fire and instill in them backbone and vision.

A Nice Deep Breath

Computer problems hamper today’s blog offerings, but I’ve managed to eek out a News Stand. Wasn’t much going on statewide — it’s a good time to take a deep politics breath and relax after the last several months. One item of note is that Attorney General-elect Ken Cuccinelli announced his transition plans. Otherwise, we found an article from Politico.com about the robo call Chuck Colson made for us (hear it here) — lil’ ol’ us in a major national blog like that! We have a few pre-election leftovers and lots of great commentary about the election results from around the country, as well as ongoing health care “reform” coverage. Take it all in . . . and breathe easy . . . for a while, anyway.

No Obama Affect

Looks like there won’t be much of an Obama affect in Virginia. Despite at least a month of radio ads, two weeks of television ads, two appearances by Veep Joe Biden, and now a second campaign stop (not to mention all that DNC cash) for Creigh Deeds, four more polls (Rasmussen, SurveyUSA, Public Policy Polling and VCU’s Commonwealth Poll) show not just a McDonnell landslide, but an unprecedented GOP landslide sweep. (The only other GOP sweep in Virginia history, in 1997, featured a close lieutenant governor’s race won by John Hager over L.F. Payne.) Not that Obama seems to care. His speech in Norfolk was less than Obamaesque and not particularly rousing on the senator’s behalf, with deprecating humor about not wearing his tie straight and something about his hair. It seems the best the POTUS could do was call him “not slick.” About the last question that remains is whether the pending landslide will result in appreciable Republican gains in the House of Delegates.

Meanwhile, the media hits keep coming from our Annual Gala Monday night. See the national attention we received from CitizenLink.org in our top story below.

Dirty Deeds, Dems In Disarray

If you want state campaign news, scroll to National News. Of course, we have a comprehensive list of articles from Virginia-based papers, but as most anticipated, the national media has taken a great interest in our beloved commonwealth. So, see USA Today, Wall Street Journal, ABCNews.com and Politico.com for the national perspective. When you do, you will see what we and the state press corps has come to see: That even Democrats don’t like Creigh Deeds’ gubernatorial campaign, from the White House down to Governor Kaine and other liberal electeds at all levels and regions of Virginia. (Deeds isn’t cozy with Governor Kaine, now, anyway, so one wonders if his comments aren’t a tit-for-tat.)

All this internal Democrat commotion brings us to a time of reminiscence, that first Deeds bumper sticker. What did it say? “Not Words. Deeds”? Or something to that effect. Yes, we have seen his deeds — not just in his big spending, anti-marriage and pro-abortion policies and flip-flops, but also in his terribly negative campaign. So bad, the inevitable has happened — an AC/DC knock-off video. (See it here.) One note of interest on another subject: According to The Daily Press, there are 100,000 fewer voters on Virginia’s books this year than last. Hmmm. Why do you think that happened?

Dems Abandoning Deeds? Surprisingly Close House Race?

Articles of note in today’s large News Stand: At the top of the News section, as well as at the top of the National News section, are articles in which leading national Democrats  sound as if Democrat gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds is in the bottom of the ninth, with at least one out. New Jersey is the name of the game, now, they say (see this QOD if you haven’t yet).

Meanwhile, Republican attorney general candidate, Senator Ken Cuccinelli (R-37, Fairfax), was the only one of the six statewide candidates to speak at the traditional Jefferson Assembly at Poplar Forest. (Virginia pols turning down a chance to appear Jeffersonian?) The Richmond Times-Dispatch looks at 10 House of Delegates races that may decide its control. Most interesting, it includes the 69th district race. The 69th is a majority-minority district and is overwhelmingly Democrat. But Republican Ernesto Sampson is giving Democrat Betsy Carr more than she wants.

Aside from campaigns, the Life issue continues to confound liberals, who don’t seem to understand that people have a natural instinct to preserve it. First, a new Pew Research poll confirms a Gallup survey earlier this year — support for Life continues to rise. Those supporting abortion are stagnant or falling. See the Analysis section. Then, for all the stereotype of college students being pro-abortion, there are Students for Life groups springing up all over Virginia campuses and around the country. The James Madison University Dukes for Life are profiled in the Harrisonburg Daily News-Record

Quote Of The Day

From the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot and Politico.com:

When questioned about the Obama factor and the backdrop in which Deeds is running, a top Democrat shot back: “If I were in their shoes and had a candidate who fumbled the tax question and was stupid enough to write an op-ed saying I’m going to raise your taxes, I’d be complaining about [the political environment], too.”

New Rasmussen Poll This Afternoon: McDonnell Up 51-42

We’re awash in polls right now and the attending controversy they inevitably entail. But a new poll released a few hours ago may shed light on which polls are more accurate — or not (see Politico.com).

Rasmussen Reports today released a poll that shows Virginia Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell leading his Democrat opponent, Senator Creigh Deeds, 51-42 (see RasmussenReports.com). Rasmussen’s previous poll had the difference at only two percentage points, contributing to the perception of a tightening race. Subsequent polls from the liberal Washington Post (a four-point difference), which has endorsed Deeds, and Public Policy Polling, a Democrat leaning firm, (a five-point difference) confirmed that perception.

Yesterday, however, a SurveyUSA/WDBJ poll had the GOP ticket up by double digits. But it was largely ignored by the Mainstream Media because its results are out of line with the others. Now, the very reputable Rasmussen poll seems as close to the SurveyUSA/WDBJ poll as it does the PPP poll (which one Richmond radio station reported on for a full 24 hours). Furthermore, even the PPP poll has Republican Lt. Governor Bill Bolling and attorney general candidate Senator Ken Cuccinelli up by eight and nine points, respectively, further validating the point of view that the GOP ticket has a significant lead.

Who’s right — those who say it’s close or those who think the GOP is on its way? We won’t know until election day. But Rasmussen does have a track record. According to a testimonial on its Web site, it ”produces some of the most accurate and reliable polls in the country today.” None other than Virginia politico guru Dr. Larry Sabato said it.

Quote Of The Day

Not nearly as inspiring as from Abigail Adams, nor is it intended to be. From “Independents edge away from Obama,” by Ben Smith, in today’s Politico.com:

“A (Creigh) Deeds spokesman, Jared Leopold . . . said Deeds doesn’t have a position on the cap-and-trade bill.”

Virginia News Stand: March 31, 2009

The last day of March brings us great news, literally: The governor signed the Choose Life license plate bill and its all over the news, with the Planned Parenthood types all in a snit. Interestingly, they’re steamed at Governor Tim Kaine, so much so that he was compelled to say if they want their own plate, they can have it. Exactly! As the author of the Choose Life amendment, Senator Ken Cuccinelli (R-37, Fairfax), has said, “If pro-abortion groups want a ‘Choose Death’ plate, fine.” So the first five articles today are about “Choose Life” and The Family Foundation is featured in four of them (see articles with *).

In other news, the RPV chairman saga drags on, while Delegate Joe Morrissey (D-74, Henrico) has found a unique way to raise campaign cash.
